My Prayer for the Tornado Victims

7:46 AMHeather

Like many of you, I am at a loss for words as I learn more about the devastation in Oklahoma.  My heart is so heavy and I feel helpless to do anything.  Yet, the greatest ministry we can offer is to storm the Throne Room of heaven on behalf of those hurting.  And thus, carry their burdens.  Today, this is my prayer for tornado victims in Oklahoma.  Also, I don't want to forget those still hurting in Texas from last week's tornadoes.

Will you join me in lifting up this prayer?

From Lamentations 3:19-26
I remember my affliction and my wandering,
the bitterness and the gall.
Lord, so many are so devastated.  Even as they wander through
the rubble, they surely feel they are wandering
through a wilderness of pain.

I well remember them [my afflictions], and
my soul is downcast within me.
I awake today with a pit in my stomach as I
consider those whose first waking moments included
the sudden reality of the pain and nightmare
that is surely overwhelming them.
Downcast.  Traumatized by the surreal experience they are facing.

YET, THIS I call to mind and therefore I have hope.
Even there, in their pit of despair--allow the minds of those hurting to
turn to Your faithfulness.  Allow a sense of hope
somehow to break through their darkness.

Because of the Lord's great love
we are not consumed.
Lord, give them eyes to see and ears to hear your great
and powerful love song for them!  Let them see
your enduring love even there--in the pain.
In the kindness of strangers.  In the arms of those
reaching in--may they see Your great love.
And may it touch their soul in such a way
that their grief and pain cannot consume them--do not allow
 it to consume them.

For His compassions never fail.
This morning, show your compassionate heart
to those suffering.  In tiny ways--let them see
that your mercy and care and concern for them
has not failed them--even there, in their anguish.

They are new every morning.
For this day--in every moment and demand this day brings--
let your mercy flow.  Fresh and new and in abundance.
Let your mercy and compassion and love
be new for the needs of this day.

Great is Your faithfulness.
As you have carried so many saints before through
seasons of suffering--carry those hurting today.
Show up so big--show off so much--that
your faithfulness to walk through the darkest days
with them is unquestionable.
Let your faithfulness and steadfastness be their refuge
in this storm.

I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore
I will wait for him."
Be their provision today.  For every need.  For every hurt.  In every moment.
Be their portion--their sufficient Savior.  Their faithful Comforter.
Help those hurting to wait for you--to cling to you.  To seek You
in their suffering and pain.

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks Him.
Abba Father, although this tragedy is not good, and much
harm and damage has occurred, we know that You are good.
Be the good in these bad times.  Be their sustainer--be the
light in their darkness.  Draw them to you, and let them
find you everywhere they turn.  Let them see you in those
who surround them, in every touch they receive today.
Let them know that YOU are there.

It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
Whisper to the spirit of every hurting soul that You are right there.
Draw them near to you--be their salvation and strength and refuge
and stronghold in their journeys of grief, as they
wait for relief and healing and hope.
Be near to the broken hearted, as you promise
that you are.  Let them know it without a doubt--
that you have not left them or forsaken them.
Even there.  Especially there--in their anguish.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
